Netanyahu and Trump are at odds over the war they started together

IsÂrael’s latÂest strikes on Lebanon and Iran have made clear that U.S. PresÂiÂdent DonÂald Trump and IsÂraeli Prime MinÂisÂter BenÂjamin NeÂtanyahu, who startÂed the war in lockÂstep, want difÂferÂent things.
Trump had pubÂlicly warned IsÂrael not to strike Beirut in its war with Iran-backed HezbolÂlah milÂiÂtants. When it did, on SunÂday, Iran reÂspondÂed by firÂing balÂlisÂtic misÂsiles at IsÂrael for the first time since the April ceaseÂfire. IsÂrael then struck Iran, with which Trump has been enÂgaged in weeks of high-stakes neÂgoÂtiÂaÂtions.
The fightÂing has since died down, but the difÂferÂences beÂtween the two leadÂers are likeÂly to perÂsist.
