On the 49th anĀniverĀsary of ReĀpubĀlic Day, Prime MinĀisĀter KamĀla PerĀsad-BissesĀsar called for urĀgent reĀforms to strengthĀen T&Tās democĀraĀcy, notĀing that the founĀdaĀtions of the ReĀpubĀlic reĀmain flawed.
āSince 1976, our ReĀpubĀliĀcan ConĀstiĀtuĀtion has conĀcenĀtratĀed exĀcesĀsive powĀer in the ofĀfice of the Prime MinĀisĀter and weakĀened so-called inĀdeĀpenĀdent inĀstiĀtuĀtions, which were ofĀten apĀpointĀed by a PresĀiĀdent beĀholdĀen to the rulĀing parĀty,ā PerĀsad-BissesĀsar said.
She arĀgued that these flaws have unĀderĀmined checks and balĀances, limĀitĀing fairĀness and acĀcountĀabilĀiĀty in govĀerĀnance.
