ForĀmer NaĀtionĀal SeĀcuĀriĀty minĀisĀters MarĀvin GonĀzaĀles and Gary GrifĀfith say conĀcerns over the veĀracĀiĀty of inĀforĀmaĀtion that formed the baĀsis for the deĀtenĀtion of busiĀnessĀman DoĀminic Hadeed and his wife Genevieve for the past 22 days perĀsist, even as the couĀple reĀmained in cusĀtody afĀter the State got a late-night stay on an earĀliĀer rulĀing orĀderĀing their reĀlease from inĀcarĀcerĀaĀtion to house arĀrest by the ApĀpeal Court.
SpeakĀing with Guardian MeĀdia hours beĀfore the late-night stay was grantĀed, GonĀzaĀles, who is alĀso PeoĀpleās NaĀtionĀal MoveĀment (PNM) chairĀman and was a NaĀtionĀal SeĀcuĀriĀty CounĀcil (NSC) memĀber unĀder the preĀviĀous govĀernĀment, said the reĀlease of the Hadeeds reĀinĀforced conĀcerns raised by the OpĀpoĀsiĀtion over the GovĀernĀmentās use of PreĀvenĀtive DeĀtenĀtion OrĀders (PDOs) to deĀtain peoĀple. He again acĀcused GovĀernĀment of weaponĀisĀing the onĀgoĀing State of EmerĀgency (SoE) to byĀpass due process.
āWe have heard nothĀing from the poĀlice as to what is the staĀtus of the inĀvesĀtiĀgaĀtion on these very seĀriĀous alĀleĀgaĀtions against the Hadeeds. The mere fact that they have been placed on a PDO for the past couĀple of weeks sugĀgests that the State does not have any evĀiĀdence to profĀfer charges against the Hadeeds and that to me is very seĀriĀous, beĀcause it says to me that the State is preĀpared to use emerĀgency powĀers vis-a-vis the isĀsuance of PreĀvenĀtive DeĀtenĀtion OrĀders, to inĀcarĀcerĀate peoĀple who do not have and whom they (the auĀthorĀiĀties) do not have evĀiĀdence to supĀport any crimĀiĀnal charges against them.ā
