The anÂnounceÂment by NaÂtionÂal Gas ComÂpaÂny (NGC) of a proÂposed 70 to 80 per cent hike in the price of natÂurÂal gas to its light inÂdusÂtriÂal and comÂmerÂcial cusÂtomers (LICs) has been the subÂject of much deÂbate over the last three weeks.
VarÂiÂous stateÂments from GovÂernÂment sources sugÂgest that the raÂtioÂnale for the inÂcrease is to susÂtain NGCâs profÂitabilÂiÂty. In makÂing the anÂnounceÂment, the NGC chairÂman, GerÂald Ramdeen notÂed that this polÂiÂcyâof highÂly subÂsidised gas prices sold beÂlow acÂquiÂsiÂtion costs, withÂout any evÂiÂdence of savÂings goÂing to cusÂtomers, in exÂisÂtence for over a decadeâis fiÂnanÂcialÂly unÂsusÂtainÂable for NGC.
Prime MinÂisÂter KamÂla PerÂsad-BissesÂsar said, âNGC is not a charÂiÂty. NGC canÂnot take a loss to make priÂvateÂly owned comÂpaÂnies profÂitable.â
